Driving through many townships in South Africa, it was hard not to notice the layered realities of poverty and the determination of those working to make a living. Vendors would often purchase goods in bulk, dividing them into smaller portions to sell to people passing by.
On a cool morning, this woman sat with a towel draped over her legs for warmth, selling her items beside worn tires and an abandoned truck as traffic moved along the dusty road behind her. I wanted to capture her apart from the chaos and uncertainty around her, just her resilience and quiet strength, and the sun shining on her to give her hope.
