Oil on Canvas

Highgate, London

Highgate represents the time I spent in London. I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting two professional oil painters and mentors and lived and worked alongside both. It was here that I learned the classical techniques of the old Masters and how to build transparent and opaque layers of paint to create paintings with real depth. I was also shown that I could add meaning to my work by not just picking any old still life. Instead, to choose objects and subjects that I could relate with. This time for me was a lot about traveling, discovering, and journal writing, along with sharing a glass of wine with new lifelong friends. Within the painting, the Rose and Crown was a pub that I worked at in order to support my day job of painting. The road ahead signifies the uncertain future, but it is lighted with appreciation of the friends that I made and everything I learned along the way to becoming a professional artist.
