Summer Umbrellas

On a three month trip to South Africa, I was quick to notice all of the colorful umbrellas used to create shade from the sun. This was funny to me as I had just left a rainy Seattle, Washington, winter behind only to arrive to a new land of umbrellas. I loved seeing the vibrant colors, the glowing sunshine, and great groups of friends enjoying each other's company.

* I painted this picture twice. First, I painted it in watercolors, while in South Africa, as watercolors are easy to travel with and easily captured the light and subjects that I wanted. I later brought the images back to my studio to paint a larger version in long lasting oil. Both have different qualities that I enjoy.
